How much it costs to hire a campervan: the price and what's behind it
70, 90, 100 euros a day? The price of hiring a campervan in Spain makes more sense once you know what's included. We break it down with no small print: models, what each day includes, real examples for a weekend and a week, and how you pay.
"How much does it cost to hire a campervan?" is one of the first questions that comes to mind once the idea of sleeping beside a reservoir starts nagging at you. It's a good question, but an incomplete one: the number alone doesn't tell you much if you don't know what's behind it. A hundred euros can be expensive or a bargain depending on what it includes. So let's do this properly: we'll walk you through the price per day for each Winkle, what's included in that price, what a whole trip actually costs with real examples, and how you pay. No small print, and no hidden cost popping up at the end that nobody mentioned.
The price per day: from €70 to €100 depending on the model
At beWinkle we have four Volkswagen Transporter camper-vans, each named after a sea and each with its own character, and the price per day varies by model:
- Adriático, from €70/day: a VW Transporter T5.1 for up to 3 people. The most accessible option, ideal for getting started in campervan life without giving up a wide bed, a fridge and a hob.
- Caribe, from €80/day: a VW Transporter T5 Kombi with up to 4 seats (a bed for 2). Practical and good-looking, with a portable shower, outdoor shower and awning.
- Índico, from €90/day: a mid-range VW Transporter T6 for up to 4 people, with up to 57 litres of water including hot water, hob and fridge.
- Báltico, from €100/day: the best-equipped VW Transporter T6, for up to 5 people. The top-of-the-range model, with the full water and comfort setup.
Why the €30 gap between the entry-level and the top model? For the usual reasons: seats, water equipment, comfort, and how much the campervan does for you day to day. The Adriático is perfect for a couple wanting to try it out; the Báltico is for those travelling in a group or wanting for nothing. There's no "best one": there's the one that fits your trip. If you're unsure which, the comparison of the four Winkles lines them all up side by side by seats, water and equipment.
What's included in the price (and what isn't)
Here's the part that really matters, because a price per day only makes sense once you know what it covers. At beWinkle, every day of hire already includes:
- Fully comprehensive insurance included. It's not an add-on offered at the counter, nor an excess that leaves you crossing your fingers. It's built in.
- 24/7 assistance across Europe. If you break down on the road, you call the number on your contract and, depending on severity, we'll sort it within 4 hours, with towing, hotel and a replacement vehicle if needed.
- Mileage to suit your route. You choose the mileage package that fits your trip, so you don't overpay if your plan is a quiet one, and you don't fall short if it's a big road trip.
- A properly equipped campervan. Bed, hob and fridge as standard, serviced and immaculate, ready for sleeping, cooking and travelling.
And what's left out of the base price? Basically three things, and it's worth being clear on them so there are no surprises:
- Fuel. It's diesel; the Winkles use between 7.5 and 8.5 litres per 100 km at 90–110 km/h, with an 80-litre tank giving a range of almost 950 km. Easy to work out for your route.
- Any extras you choose. Additional drivers, specific equipment... whatever you add when booking.
- Extra mileage, if you go over the package you booked. That's why the package is chosen to suit your route: so you can match it to your trip.
The idea is simple: we'd rather have the day's price cover everything important, rather than tacking on "essentials" separately until the final number bears no resemblance to the one in the advert.
The real cost of a trip: two examples
Euros per day are all well and good, but what you really want to know is how much your trip will cost. Let's go through two concrete examples so you get a real sense of it. (These are estimates to help you calculate; you'll always see the exact total when you book, based on dates, model and extras.)
A long weekend, as a couple
Picture three days in the Adriático (€70/day), the ideal Winkle for two:
- Hire: 3 days × €70 = €210.
- Mileage package: you choose one suited to a short getaway, say a relaxed route through the sierra.
- Fuel: for a 300–400 km weekend, a full tank easily covers it; reckon on around €40–50 in diesel.
With that, you get three days of complete freedom, sleeping wherever the map still shows sea, for quite a bit less than a hotel getaway with meals out would cost. And no rushing to check out.
A week, in a group
Now seven days in the Índico (€90/day), for up to four:
- Hire: 7 days × €90 = €630.
- Mileage package: for a week-long trip covering more ground, go for a generous one.
- Fuel: depends on how many kilometres you cover; a north-to-south route uses more than a valley plan.
Split between four people, that week in a campervan — with accommodation, transport and a "room with a view" all bundled into the same vehicle — works out at a per-person, per-night figure that surprises people. That's the beauty of travelling by campervan: you're not paying for accommodation on one side, the car on another, and the treat of waking up somewhere new each morning on a third. It's all rolled into one.
Renting a campervan versus other ways of travelling
When you compare the price of a campervan with "a hotel", you're not actually comparing like for like. A rented campervan is, at once, your transport, your accommodation and your way of experiencing a place. Add up the hire car on one side, the hotel nights on another, and the feeling of being tied to bookings and check-in times on a third... and the sums change.
It's not that one option is inherently better than the other: for an urban weekend, a hotel makes perfect sense. But if what you want is to keep moving, change scenery every day and sleep with the window open onto a reservoir, the campervan gives you that whole experience for one price. And compared with buying your own campervan — with the outlay, the annual insurance, the MOT, the parking space and the depreciation — hiring gives you exactly the days you'll use, without the van sitting idle for eleven months of the year.
Season, advance booking and availability
The price per day is what it is, but what does shift is availability. Long weekends, August and the most sought-after weeks fill up fastest, simply because there are four Winkles and a lot of people wanting to hit the road. Since booking is 100% online with real-time availability for the next twelve months, you can open the calendar, see which models are free on your dates and decide with the full picture in front of you.
If you don't have dates yet and what you want is to pick the right time of year, we have a guide to the best times to hire a campervan in Spain comparing all four seasons.
The practical takeaway is simple: the sooner you check, the more room you have to choose the model you want and dates that suit you. If your trip has a fixed date — a wedding, a long weekend, your usual holidays — checking early is the difference between choosing for yourself and settling for whatever's left.
How you pay: 50% now, the rest before you set off
Paying is just as straightforward as everything else:
- You secure your dates with a 50% deposit. With that, the campervan is yours for those days.
- You pay the remaining 50% around 7 days before setting off. No rush, and no paying it all months in advance.
- Everything online, with digital signature. No queuing at a counter, no paper contracts. The gap between dreaming up the trip and driving it is ten minutes of paperwork done from your sofa.
And if plans change, the cancellation terms are clear from the start: full refund up to 30 days before, 50% between 30 and 7 days before, and under 7 days we keep the deposit but offer a free date change with no cost, valid for up to 6 months. No surprises.
So, how much does it cost?
It costs between €70 and €100 a day depending on the Winkle you choose, with fully comprehensive insurance, 24/7 assistance and mileage to suit your route already included. From there, your trip costs whatever you decide: the days, the model, the mileage and the fuel. No hidden small print, no essentials tacked on the side.
If you want to work out the exact figure for your dates, the best thing is to check it yourself: take a look at the four Winkles and their prices, check the requirements for hiring a campervan beforehand, and once you're clear on it, choose your dates and book with real-time availability in front of you. In ten minutes you'll know, down to the last cent, how much your trip costs.
