What's included when you rent a campervan: insurance, mileage, kit and extras you should check

Find out what's included when you rent a campervan: insurance, mileage, kitchen and assistance, plus the extras and costs you should check.

You can only compare campervan prices properly once you know what's actually inside. At beWinkle, the base rate includes 100 kilometres per day, fully comprehensive insurance, 24/7 assistance across Europe, and a campervan with a bed, gas hob and fridge. Other elements depend on the model or get added as extras during booking.

The difference between a clear quote and a nasty surprise at the end usually comes down to five things: mileage, excess, sleeping kit, cleaning and on-the-road costs. This guide breaks them down so you know exactly what you're paying for before picking your dates.

Quick answer: every Winkle includes the vehicle, seats and beds according to the model, a hob, a fridge, 100 km a day, fully comprehensive insurance with an excess, and 24/7 assistance. Water, heating, the pop-top roof and other features vary between campervans. Bedding, some packs and services like cleaning are selected separately.

This breakdown avoids two common mistakes: assuming every campervan carries exactly the same kit, and comparing only the daily rate. A seemingly cheaper option might leave out the mileage or gear you actually need; a pricier one might already include it.

Vehicle, seats and beds included depending on the Winkle

The rental includes use of the chosen campervan for the booked dates, plus the fixed kit listed on its spec sheet. At beWinkle, all four campervans are Volkswagen Transporters, but they don't share the same capacity or layout.

WinkleApproved seats for travellingRecommended sleeping capacityMain feature
Adriático3Ideal for 2Extra-large bed, hob and fridge
Caribe4Ideal for 2Outdoor awning, fridge and kitchen unit
Índico4Up to 4Pop-top roof, heating and 57-litre water tank
Báltico5Up to 5Central bed, pop-top roof, hot water and solar panels

"Five seats" doesn't automatically mean five adults will sleep as comfortably as a couple would. Always distinguish between seats approved for driving and actual sleeping space. Check the dimensions of each bed and think about who'll take which one before booking.

On the comparison page for the four Winkles you can check capacity, layout and starting price. Each campervan's individual spec sheet is the most accurate source for its full inventory.

How many kilometres are included in the rental?

The beWinkle base rate includes 100 kilometres per day of rental. That's not a figure you need to hit exactly each day: the total is calculated over the whole booking.

For example, on a five-day rental, the base package adds up to 500 kilometres. You could drive 70 km one day and 180 km the next, as long as the final total doesn't exceed the contracted package.

During booking you can upgrade to:

  • 200 km a day: an extra €10 per day;
  • unlimited mileage: an extra €20 per day;
  • excess over the package: €0.50 per additional kilometre at drop-off.

Choose your package based on the whole route, not just the distance between origin and destination. Factor in side trips, detours, time spent looking for service areas and a reasonable margin. Our guide on how to calculate mileage for a campervan rental includes examples for trips of different lengths.

Fully comprehensive insurance and assistance included

The rental includes fully comprehensive insurance with an excess of €600 per claim. The excess is the portion of the risk the customer takes on when a covered incident happens; it doesn't mean every bit of damage will always cost €600.

beWinkle also includes 24/7 roadside assistance across Europe. Under normal conditions of use, assistance covers towing and, where the incident warrants it, accommodation and a replacement vehicle.

The published terms cover several scenarios:

  • Mechanical breakdown: fully covered, with assistance activated.
  • Damage caused by an identified third party: covered by the third party's insurance, with no excess applied to the customer.
  • Unidentified third party, fixed object, theft or attempted theft: the fully comprehensive insurance kicks in and the excess applies as appropriate.
  • Improper use or breach of contract: may fall outside cover and generate costs for the renter.

For bookings of at least a week, you can add an extended guarantee for €12 a day that reduces the excess from €600 to €200. Check eligibility and terms when booking.

Insurance included doesn't mean zero risk. Read the authorised territory, exclusions, accident procedure and which drivers are named on the contract. If something happens, report it before arranging any repair yourself.

Kitchen, fridge and cookware: what you'll find on board

Every Winkle comes with a gas hob and fridge. Capacity, format and specific accessories vary from one model to another, so always check the individual campervan's spec sheet.

For example, the Índico lists a 50-litre fridge with freezer compartment, a sink, an indoor table and specific utensils. Other Winkles have a different set-up. Don't use one model's inventory to assume what the whole fleet includes.

Before setting off, confirm:

  • whether the hob is fixed or portable;
  • number of burners and whether gas is included;
  • usable fridge capacity;
  • crockery and utensils provided;
  • basic supplies you'll need to bring yourself;
  • rules for cooking inside and outside the campervan.

The beWinkle help centre states that cookware and the welcome kit are added as an extra when booking. Check the final summary to know exactly which pack you've selected and for how many people.

Water, shower, heating and power depend on the model

These elements shouldn't be presented as if they were identical across every campervan. The configuration published by beWinkle includes:

  • Báltico and Índico: up to 57 litres of water and hot water, according to the help centre;
  • Adriático: a 20-litre clean water tank;
  • Caribe: a portable shower;
  • all Winkles: an outdoor shower solution, with features to check on the individual spec sheet.

Standalone heating, the pop-top roof, solar panels, the exterior 220V hook-up and indoor sockets also depend on the vehicle. If you're travelling in winter, with kids, or for many days, these differences can matter more than the daily rate.

Don't assume the toilet is a fixed bathroom. beWinkle offers a portable chemical toilet as an option. Check what's included in the pack, where it's stored and what products you'll need for use and emptying.

Online booking, paperwork and campervan handover

The price includes a digital booking and handover process:

  1. choose your Winkle and dates with up-to-date availability;
  2. pay 50% to secure the booking;
  3. pay the remaining 50% no later than seven days before pick-up;
  4. upload your ID and driving licence to the customer portal;
  5. sign the digital contract;
  6. get a full walkthrough of the campervan at handover;
  7. have support available throughout your trip.

Pick-up takes place in Madrid. Confirm the exact location, time, the paperwork each driver needs to bring, and the drop-off procedure on the spec sheet or in your booking.

Renting the campervan doesn't automatically make any companion an authorised driver. Anyone who's going to drive must meet the requirements and be named on the contract. beWinkle requires a valid category B driving licence held for at least two years and a minimum age of 25.

Optional extras: only add what solves an actual need

Extras aren't mandatory by default. Their value depends on the model, the route, the number of travellers and what you'd rather bring from home.

Published extraIndicative priceWhen it might be worth it
Cleaning€45If you'd rather not handle the final clean yourself
Additional driverFreeTo share the driving; must be named on the contract
Portable toilet€15If you need a toilet solution on board
Bedding for two€20So you don't have to bring sheets, a pillow and a blanket from home
Two-burner portable hob€10When you want to expand or adapt the available cooking setup
Cleaning products€8To have a kit with toilet cleaning products
Extended guarantee€12/dayOn eligible bookings of at least a week, to reduce the excess
Bike rack pack€8To carry up to two bikes, subject to compatibility

Prices and availability may change. Use this table to understand the structure, but treat the summary shown right before payment as final.

Costs the rental price typically doesn't include

Renting the campervan is one thing; the total cost of the trip is another. Budget separately for:

  • fuel;
  • tolls, vignettes and ferries;
  • campsites and paid motorhome service areas;
  • food and personal shopping;
  • fines or unpaid tolls;
  • kilometres exceeding the contracted package;
  • cleaning, if you don't return the campervan per the terms and didn't book the service;
  • damage, excess charges or costs arising from a breach of contract;
  • specific insurance for Morocco, published at €50;
  • extras selected voluntarily.

You'll also need to provide the security deposit required under the contract. It's not a final cost if the rental closes with no outstanding amounts, but it is money that can be temporarily held. Our guide on how the security deposit works when renting a campervan explains the difference from the excess.

How to compare two campervan rental prices

Don't compare "€90 a day" with "€100 a day" until you've turned both offers into the same trip. Use this method:

  1. Match the dates and duration. Check pick-up and drop-off times, not just the number of nights.
  2. Match the capacity. Compare approved seats and beds that your group can actually use.
  3. Match the mileage. Work out the route and add the same package to both offers.
  4. Match the insurance. Check the excess, territory, assistance and exclusions.
  5. Match the equipment. Add bedding, cookware, a toilet or a bike rack if you need them.
  6. Add mandatory costs. Include fees, mandatory cleaning or admin charges where they exist.
  7. Separate trip expenses. Fuel and tolls shouldn't be confused with the vehicle rate.
  8. Check cancellation and payment terms. A less flexible rate doesn't equal one with better terms.

Example of a correct comparison

Imagine a five-day trip covering 850 kilometres. With beWinkle's base package you'd have 500 kilometres, so you'd need to work out whether upgrading to 200 km a day makes sense, or paying the possible excess. If you compare that total against another company advertising a lower daily rate but including less mileage, the advertised figure doesn't reflect the equivalent cost.

Do the same with bedding, cleaning and the excess. The comparable quote is the total configured for the same trip, not the biggest price shown in the header.

How many kilometres are included?

The base rate includes 100 km a day. You can upgrade to 200 km a day for €10/day or choose unlimited mileage for €20/day. Excess mileage over the contracted package is published at €0.50/km.

Is bedding included?

The beWinkle help centre presents it as an extra added during booking. The published pack includes sheets, a pillow and a blanket for two people. Check the final summary, as the contents and price shown for your booking are what applies.

Yes. It must be returned clean and with the cookware put away. If you'd rather not deal with it, you can add the published cleaning package for €45.

Is fuel included?

No. Fuel used during the trip is the traveller's responsibility. Also check the fuel level at which you need to return the tank.

Can I add another driver?

Set up the rental for your trip, not for a generic rate

First choose the campervan based on seats, beds and kit. Then work out the mileage, add only the extras you actually need, and check the insurance, deposit and outside costs. That way you'll know the real cost before you book.

Choose your dates and check what's included in your Winkle's final price. The booking summary and current contract take precedence over any general information.
